Support for Embedding KDE Applications in Mozilla Firefox Developed
Wednesday July 6th, 2005

Both roseman and geraldo sent us links to a KDE Dot News article reporting that technology allowing KDE applications to be embedded in Mozilla Firefox has been previewed. The new code is compatible with any KDE application that is based on KParts, KDE's reusable component technology. When it's checked in, KDE users will be able to do things like view PDF files with KPDF or watch movies with Kaffeine directly within the Firefox content area.

The integration code was developed by Tobias K鰊ig on the KDE booth at the LinuxTag 2005 conference, which took place in Germany two weeks ago.

Other efforts to improve the integration between KDE and Firefox include the Kecko project, which aims to make Firefox work like a native KDE application and allow Gecko to be embedded as a KPart in other KDE programs. This includes the Konqueror Web browser, where Gecko will be an alternative to the standard KHTML rendering engine. We last reported on the progress of the Kecko project in April.
