Before we delve into why this area is such a disaster, let’s first take a brief detour into history. Once upon a time, there was the Java exception mechanism. Said mechanism allowed us to merrily toss up exceptions when things went wrong. In the same playground, we also had this idea of objectoriented code, whereby we split things up into different tiers, depending on what they do. So one tier calls down to the next, which is lower level, and so on. Each layer has a contract between it and the others above and below, and part of this contract is error handling.
