The market enabled enterprises to compare and evaluate alternative software solutions, often against their own in-house IT shop. Subsequently, companies began looking at outsourcing IT, as it became too complicated, and as in-house teams failed to master the backlog of requirements that required urgent implementation to beat the competition. Strategic outsourcing became a significant market in the IT industry; often, in fact, the whole IT organization was acquired by an IT service company that offered fixed levels of service and promised to take away all IT "worries" from the company. Concentration on the core business soon became the motto of the day.
